Whether you’re looking to book a classic 100-bird pheasant or 150-bird partridge day, spend a few peaceful hours fishing on the River Ettrick or River Yarrow, or explore the history of the Battle of Philiphaugh or wander around one of the second largest walled gardens in Scotland, Philiphaugh, promises an unforgettable experience rooted in authenticity, heritage, and understated luxury.

Renowned for its varied topography - from steep wooded banks and open glens to carefully managed farmland - the topography produces fast, high birds that consistently challenge even the most experienced of shots.

Days are typically hosted for 8-10 guns, with every detail designed to ensure comfort and enjoyment.

A typical day includes:

  • 4-5 drives across varied ground

  • Tea, coffee, pastries and breakfast rolls on arrival

  • Elevenses in the field - piping hot canapés, steaming soup and a selection of drinks that warm both the hands and the spirit

  • A sumptuous two-course lunch served in the warmth of the lunch hut

  • Retiring to the drawing room in the main house where afternoon tea awaits at the end of the day

  • 4×4 transport around the estate (if required)

  • Safety equipment provided

With access to two of the Borders’ most beautiful rivers: the Ettrick and Yarrow, both are known for their clean waters, peaceful surroundings and exciting catches.

Philiphaugh offers private fishing on selected pools along both rivers ideal for those seeking Atlantic salmon in the autumn or brown trout earlier in the season. With a maximum number of 4-rods per day the experience is designed to offer a peaceful uncrowded experience.

With 5 main pools across the two rivers, Philiphaugh is able to offer varied water and an experience to suit all abilities.

  • The Long Pool (Ettrick) - strong runs and consistency (ideal for experienced anglers)

  • The Bridge Haugh Pool (Yarrow) - easily accessible (well-suited for beginners or relaxed casting)

Additional options:

  • Local ghillie services are available for guiding or tuition

  • Tackle hire available by prior appointment

  • Picnic lunches can be ordered in advance and delivered directly to the river bank
